“The Kingdom of God is About Righteousness”

Romans 15:21

Rather, as it is written: "Those who were not told about him will see, and those who have not heard will understand."

Thoughts for Today:

This is a quote from Isaiah 52:15, which seems to be Paul's life verse and a great source of inspiration. He spent his days fulfilling this passage -- Paul would enter town after town, where the Gospel was not known, and begin to preach to the spiritually blind. Soon someone would say, "I understand. I will accept Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior."

In Acts 14:3, we are told how Paul (and Barnabas) established their credentials as they traveled about: "So Paul and Barnabas spent considerable time there, speaking boldly for the Lord, who confirmed the message of his grace by enabling them to perform signs and wonders." The New Testament hadn't yet been written so they didn't come to town with a Bible in their hands. So God gave them signs and wonders to confirm their authority.

In the later years of his life, the Apostle John would write (2 John 1:10): "If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not take them into your house or welcome them." Even then, with or without signs and wonders, the identifying mark of a man called by God to preach the Gospel was correct doctrine. And today, it is exactly the same. So should we forget signs and wonders? I don't think so, but a great many people have been deceived by incorrect teaching, which is supported by what seems to be the miraculous. Paul has been very careful to teach that the Kingdom of God is not about "eating or drinking". (Romans 14:17: "For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit"). And it's not about signs and wonders either -- it's about righteousness.

Questions to Ponder:

When the Lord comes into our lives He cleans us up. We don't stay the same. The true sign and wonder of a Christ-centered life is right-living. How does your life look? The same as before or moving toward God's call for righteousness?
