“Attracted Toward Sin”

Romans 7:21-23

So I find this law at work: When I want to do good, evil is right there with me. For in my inner being I delight in God's law; but I see another law at work in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within my members.

Thoughts for Today:

In own my mind I want to follow God's law -- just like Paul. In fact I've memorized a lot of Scripture. I read and study it often. I delight in the Word. It brings me great joy and peace. I truly want to follow the Lord's commandments and walk in His paths of righteousness. And then my body rebels. My eyes are drawn lustfully toward a larger home in a better location, or perhaps the sleek lines of a new and very fast sports car. My ears tune-in to the latest celebrity gossip. Or I am sucked into preoccupation with the latest financial scandal.

No matter what it is -- just like Paul -- there is always a war waging in my mind, "making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within my members." Can you relate? Frustrating isn't it?

Questions to Ponder:

I guess one of the best things about this section of Romans is that Paul reveals just how human he is. How he has struggled with the same things that plague us. It gives me comfort knowing I am not alone. There is not something especially defective about me personally when I am tempted, stumble, or fall. We know we all have the same problem: Sin is waging a war and making us prisoners, but we don't have to give in. We don't have to surrender to this body of death. Jesus died that we might live. Have you accepted His gift?
