““Rejoicing at the Success of Others””

Philippians 2:18

So you too should be glad and rejoice with me.

Thoughts for Today:

As we continue with Paul’s thought from the previous verses, he’s basically saying, “If your life confirms the Gospel message, then my life is poured out like a drink offering and we should all be glad and rejoice.” I think it’s incredible that he could maintain such a positive attitude regardless of his current predicament (in prison), and the pressure of constant criticism. Only a person with the true spirit and mind of Christ could possess Paul’s character and demeanor.

We can learn a great deal from Paul’s example. He tells us we should always “be glad and rejoice” because Jesus sacrificed His life for us and we each have the opportunity to respond joyfully in service to Him. So when we hear news of another church or ministry that is doing really well, and people are responding by placing their faith and trust in the Lord, we are to rejoice at their success. Not react with criticism or competitive anxiety. There is no room for discord or a lack of harmony within the body of Christ.

Today we have some of the same sort of strife, jealousy, pride and arrogance plaguing our churches and ministries as in Paul’s day. And it hurts the cause of Christ. However, like Paul, if we are walking in true humility we will always be “glad and rejoice” at the success and service of others

Questions to Ponder:

When others succeed in their service for Christ, how do you respond? Are you truly rejoicing at the success of others?
